Sunderland AFC Women are to take a step toward turning professional from the start of the 2023-24 season with some players going full time.

Other players will remain in a part time capacity with the Barclays Women’s Championship side, as they continue to forge successful careers outside of football.

Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman told safc.com: “We have fully integrated the women’s team within our football operation throughout the past two seasons and following promotion in 2021, the club has made an assured transition to the second tier. We remain committed to playing our part in the development of the women’s game and believe our continued investment will allow the team to take further strides forward during the 2023-24 season.”

General Manager of Women’s Football Alex Clarke added: “The team’s progression since the festive period has been supported by the recruitment of a range of full-time staff, which will also ensure the appropriate resource is in place as we move to a hybrid model. We have a talented young squad in place and this progression will further support their development, as we strive to compete with the sides currently competing for top-flight promotion.”
