Two first-half goals in Doetinchem saw Spain defeat Portugal 2-0 in the opening Euro 2017 Group D match.
Jennifer Hermoso missed a glorious early chance for the Spaniards and Silvia Meseguer saw her attempt saved by diving Portuguese keeper Patricia Morais.
But midway through the first half the opening goal arrived, Andrea Pereira picked out Vicky Losada who fired high into the net.
Portugal were on their way to losing their debut in the finals, when Amanda Sampedro was allowed a free header to double the lead 3 minutes before the break.
Sílvia Rebelo headed off the line to deny Spain a third soon after the hour mark and then Morais tipped the ball over the bar from Losada’s long-range effort.
