Sheffield United Women’s Charlotte Newsham signs new contract

Sheffield United's Charlotte Newsham

Sheffield United centre-back and Player of the Year Charlotte Newsham has signed a new contract ahead of the 2023/24 Barclays Women’s Championship season.

The defender was an ever-present for the Blades last season, playing every minute of league football, culminating in being named the Club’s Player of the Year.

Newsham scored two goals from defence early in the season before moving into a central position under new head coach Jonathan Morgan, helping United to four straight wins and three clean sheets at the end of the season.

The 23-year-old joined in 2021 from Huddersfield Town after progressing through the Manchester United academy and instantly became an integral part of the Blades defence.

Newsham said: “It’s great to be back. Once I heard about the club’s backing and Jonathan’s [Morgan] plans and ambitions, there’s only one place I wanted to be and I’m buzzing to be back with the Blades.”

Head coach Jonathan Morgan commented: “Newsh is extremely versatile, we saw the benefit of putting her at centre-back last season and she thoroughly deserved to be named player of the year with the performances she put in.

“But also her consistency, she played every minute last season and that’s not easy, but it’s given her the chance to progress into this full-time set up and I’m really pleased that’s something she wants to do.”
