Republic of Ireland Women went down to a narrow defeat against Belgium at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.

Vera Pauw’s side went behind on 14 minutes, when Tine De Caigny prodded Laura de Neve’s in-swinging free-kick past Courtney Brosnan.

The offside flag then denied Kyra Carusa on her first start after breaking in behind the Belgian defence but Heather Payne had the best chance, only to shoot straight at goalkeeper Justien Odeurs.

Almost straight after the restart Katie McCabe – making her 50th appearance – got one on one with the keeper but was denied a penalty when tackled by Kassandra Missipo.

Megan Connolly made a crucial block and Brosnan pushed a shot from De Caigny round the post, before Ruesha Littlejohn’s curling free kick was well saved by Odeurs.
