Germany U-17s close in on World Cup quarter-finals

Germany are through to the FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup quarter-finals, while nearly 9,000 watched tournament hosts India.

Brazil and USA are on four points each following a 1-1 tie, in which Nicollette Kiorpes’ opener in the first half for the Americans was quickly cancelled out by Carol.

Also in Group A, there was a crowd of 8,749 for hosts India’s meeting with Morocco. The Africans got off the mark with a 3-0 victory, Doha El-Madani’s second-half penalty added to by Yasmine Zouhir and Djennah Cherif. India cannot now progress from the group stage.

Germany have two wins from two in Group B after hitting Chile for six. Jella Veit, Alara Şehitler and Mara Alber all netted before the break, Marie Steiner later converted from the spot, with Loreen Bender and Laila Portella also among the six different scorers.

In the same group, Nigeria sit second after securing their first points with a 4-0 defeat of New Zealand, who are now unable to make the knockout rounds. Amina Bello and Miracle Usani got first-half goals, Taiwo Afolabi and Edidiong Etim extending the advantage later on.

The games in Group C and D on Saturday (UK times) are;

12pm – China v Colombia, France v Tanzania
3:30pm – Japan v Canada, Spain v Mexico
