FIFA Women’s World Cup drama as Jamaica knock out Brazil and South Africa progress at the expense of Italy.
Jamaica held out against Brazil for a goalless draw, to take second spot in the table, end Brazil’s World Cup and advance to play the winners of Group H.
Khadija Shaw fired over late on for the Reggae Girlz, while Becky Spencer made a save to prevent a last-gasp winner from Brazil’s Andressa.
France had to come from behind to see off Panama 6-3 and win Group F, thereby booking a clash with the Group H runners-up.
Marta Cox stunned France with a goal from her second-minute 25-yard free kick but Les Bleues when Maelle Lakrar’s header was parried by Yenith Bailey but the attempted clearance spun into the net.
France were ahead when Kadidiatou Diani netted at the second attempt and off the crossbar, Diani then doubling her tally from the spot and Lea le Garrec got the fourth by half time.
Diani completed her hat-trick with a second spot-kick, Yomira Pinzon also converting from 12 yards for Panama, Lineth Cedeno scored their third but Vicki Becho netted France’s sixth.
South Africa made the last sixteen with a stoppage-time winner over Italy, setting up a meeting with Netherlands as a result.
Arianna Caruso converted an 11th-minutre penalty for Italy but South Africa’s Robyn Moodaly hit the post before Benedetta Orsi’s backpass beat her own keeper to gift an equaliser.
Hildah Magaia swept the Africans ahead on 67 minutes but Italy were back on level terms when Caruso’s final touch to Cristiana Girelli’s header was eventually declared onside.
In the second of eleven minutes of added time, Thembi Kgatlana put Banyana Banyana 3-2 up from Magaia’s pass.
Sweden were already through from Group G before playing Argentina, whose tournament they ended with a 2-0 victory.
