Aston Villa’s debut in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League ended with a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City at Villa Park.

The visitors were two up by the break from defensive errors, Georgia Stanway taking advantage past goalkeeper Sian Rogers on each occasion.

Sam Mewis had a goal ruled out and Stanway might have done better with a couple of other opportunities, while Villa had a reply denied for offside as Stine Larsen followed up Ramona Petzelberger’s parried effort.

Diana Silva should have got Villa pack into it soon after the restart and Emma Follis was put through but Ellie Roebuck blocked the shot.

Rogers saved from Stanway and Janine Beckie, Ellen White struck the post and did find the net only for the flag to go up.

Nat Haigh deflected a Mewis strike onto the roof of the net but City had done enough for a winning start.
