This Friday, Southampton FC will play host to the Lionesses at the start of their journey to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Today, Lionesses legend and most capped England player of all time, Fara Williams, visited an array of streets in Southampton that match up to the nine cities of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup for surprise ticket giveaways for this week’s game against North Macedonia. Fara, who scored 40 goals in 172 appearances for the national team, provided tickets to seven football-loving families on Sydney Road, Adelaide Road, and Wellington Avenue.
Marzena Bogdanowicz, Head of Marketing & Commercial, Women’s Football at The FA, said: “Southampton is a city rich in history as a thriving port and gateway to the Southern Hemisphere, so it feels very fitting that the Lionesses begin their journey on the south coast. We’re delighted that we can give away some tickets to locals so they can watch what is hopefully the start of an exciting journey.”
Fara Williams, former Lionesses midfielder, said: “It was amazing to see the pride local Southampton residents have in hosting the Lionesses this Friday for what is hopefully the start of their journey to the FIFA Women’s World Cup next year. Fingers crossed the Lionesses can get off to a winning start and put on a brilliant display for the crowd at St Mary’s.”
