Arsenal ran out 4-0 winners over Juventus in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Manchester City eventually saw off Hammarby.
Group C – Juventus 0-4 Arsenal, Bayern Munich 3-0 Vålerenga
Group D – Barcelona 7-0 St. Pölten, Manchester City 2-0 Hammarby
Arsenal’s Frida Leonharden Maanum scored seven minutes before the break, capping a sweeping move when turning home Caitlin Foord’s pass. Alessia Russo had already forced two smart saves from Pauline Peyraud-Magnin, as the Gunners had the better of the first half.
Emily Fox hit the Juventus crossbar, Leah Williamson headed a good chance over but Stina Blackstenius came off the bench to break into the box and hit a shot to hot for the keeper to handle inside her near post.
The Gunners made sure of the points when Mariona Caldentey picked up an attempted clearance and fired it into the roof of the net.
Foord got the fourth from close range of Kyra Cooney-Cross’s delivery, as Arsenal made it two wins from three games in the group.
In the same group Bayern Munich were two up in 17 minutes against Vålerenga, Pernille Harder’s opener added to from a Giulia Gwinn penalty. Sarah Zadrazil made it 3-0 in added time, as Bayern clinched a third win from three group games to date.
Manchester City’s Aoba Fujino fired over the top, Khadija Shaw grazed the outside of the post and Mary Fowler forced a good stop from Anna Tamminen as the hosts struggled to create opportunities against Hammarby, who were backed by an impressively large and unrelentingly raucous contingent.
Asato Miyagawa might have given the visitors the lead before the break but less than 90 seconds after the restart, Fowler’s ball back into the six-yard box was turned in by Laura Blindkilde Brown.
Ayaka Yamashita had to turn a rocket from Thea Sørbo over her crossbar to maintain City’s advantage, Fujino then put another clear opportunity clear of the bar but did stoop to head home Leila Ouahabi’s cross with ten minutes left as a third straight group win was secured.
Barcelona blew away Austrian side St Polten with five goals in the last 13 minutes of the first 45, Ewa Pajor netting twice, Kika Nazareth, Keira Walsh and Clàudia Pina once each. Pina added her second from the spot and Caroline Graham Hansen got a late seventh.
