Arsenal had to settle for a narrow 1-0 home win in the Barclays Women’s Super League over relegation-threatened Leicester City.

City’s Hannah Cain conceded a fifth-minute penalty when bringing down Katie McCabe, who stepped up to take the spot-kick but saw it saved by Janina Leitzig.

Sabrina D’Angelo blocked a chance when Cain got through on goal, a save that she repeated in the second half.

It took something special to break the deadlock, the Gunners’ Frida Maanum curling the ball over the keeper into the far corner after 64 minutes.

Leitzig tipped over a drive by Maanum, who also hit the bar with a free kick.

All three points were Arsenal’s after ten minutes of injury time, as they moved within two points if third-placed Chelsea but from a game more.

Leicester remain tenth, ahead of Brighton on goal-difference  and two points off the bottom.
