City lost the home leg 2-1 last Wednesday at Petershill and Captain Rachel Corsie knows they have it all to do this week. She said, “There is little doubt that we got off to a poor start. We let them get two early goals and despite dominating the second half we were only able to pull one goal back, so they definitely are in the driving seat at this point. However, it is only half time. We have 90 minutes still to play and I am confident we can score over there. Fingers crossed we keep it tight at the back and sneak at least a couple to get us into the last 16.”
Last season, City faced a not too dissimilar prospect at this stage of the competition. Having drawn 1-1 with Iceland Champions Valur Reykjavik at home at Petershill, the Scots went over to Iceland seven days later and won 3-0. City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black, believes his side is capable of something similar again.
He said, “I always feel we can score goals. We struggled with their physicality in the first match, but that is mainly down to the lack of competition we get domestically. We have not lost a League match in four years now and there is no getting away from the fact that this causes us problems in Europe. Fortuna are ranked 8th in the Champions League overall and are a strong side. But, we can play at lot better than we did last week and I am more than confident the girls will put in a better performance on Wednesday. Although they are strong favourites, we are not out of this by any means and look forward to the challenge ahead.”
