Colombia Clinch World Cup Place

Colombia is the second South American nation to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™.

Colombia qualified through the Copa America final round on Sunday 28 September 2014 in Quito, Ecuador. They achieved a creditable 0-0 draw with Final Phase group winners Brazil to make sure of second place.

Colombia is the 15th finalist confirmed for next year’s final competition, which will be played from 6 June to 5 July in six host cities across Canada. Colombia and Brazil are the two CONMEBOL nations that participate in next year’s competition.

Ecuador, meanwhile, have advanced to the CONCACAF-CONMEBOL play-off that will take place in November following a 3-2 defeat of Argentina to finish tbird in the group. Fair play award winners Argentina had taken a 2-0 lead in the first half-hour through Estefania Bannini and Florencia Bonsegundo but Carina Caicedo began the fightback before the break, with Ingrid Rodriguez levelling on the hour and Giannina Lattanzio grabbing a 78th-minute winner.

From 129 competing nations, the 24 finalists will all be known by late November ahead of the 6 December 2014 Official Draw. The 15 finalists already confirmed are Canada (host), Brazil and Colombia from South America, England, France, Germany, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland from Europe, and Australia, China PR, Japan, Korea Republic and Thailand from Asia.
