This time next week, there will be only two spots remaining for the 24-nation FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™.
Over the course of a six-day span – from 24 through 29 October – there will be a bevy of Qualifiers that will confirm five finalists from CONCACAF, Africa and Oceania.
So far, 17 finalists have been confirmed, with the latest Nigeria and Cameroon qualified through the African Women’s Championship on Wednesday 22 October. One more African nation will qualify through the match for third place on Saturday 25 October — either Côte d’Ivoire or South Africa.
CONCACAF, meanwhile, will qualify two nations on Friday 24 October and one more on 26 October. From the four remaining CONCACAF teams – Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico and USA – three will qualify this weekend.
Oceania will hold its four-nation competition from 25 to 29 October, with Cook Islands, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Tonga all participating. Only one of those four nations will qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™.
As for the final two spots, they will be decided by 2 December, four days before the Official Draw. One spot is reserved for a European nation (either Netherlands, Scotland, Italy or Ukraine, with playoffs to begin this weekend) while the other spot is reserved for either CONCACAF or South America (CONCACAF’s fourth-place team will face Ecuador, with the final match on 2 December).
The Official Draw takes place on 6 December in Canada’s National Capital Region, with only the 24 finalists invited to the event that will determine in which groups (and in which cities) each nation will kick off their FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ campaign.
