Cambridge On Course For County Cup Double

Cambridge went in to the game at Ely City FC as favourites, being County League Premiership leaders, while Wisbech play a division below and the underdogs lost Kyra Clarke on 18 minutes, stretchered off following a head injury.

United went ahead on 28 minutes, Monique Christian forcing a corner which led to Sophie Ingle driving a ball into the box that went through everyone and into the back of the net.

But Wisbeck took just 5 minutes to equalise, Albany Hodgson’s free kick misjudged by advancing keeper Tafadzwa Mhunduru and tapped home by Sophie Gutteridge.

Ebony-Jade Rule forced the Fenmans’ keeper, Abbie Vennie, into a good save and fellow sub Gemma Clark then put a ball across an unguarded net with no-one there to finish it for United.

The winner arrived 10 minutes from time, a free kick from captain Becca Fay fell to Christian, who hit a 25-yard lofted effort over the keeper and under the bar.

Thursday sees United’s Premier League side take on Great Shelford of the Eastern League for the Cambridgeshire Cup at Histon FC, 7.30 KO.
