Midway through the first half, Tottenham’s Toni-Anne Wayne tipped was forced to tip away Nikita Whinnett’s dipping effort from outside the area and then Kit Graham broke through challenges before Leah Rowle made a goal-saving tackle for Spurs.
Sam Pittuck made a crucial block for the Addicks when Wendy Martin broke away and set up Riana Soobadoo for a shot on goal, with Spurs going close again before the break as Jenna Schillaci’s corner was headed against the bar by Martin and Josie Green’s overhead kick went inches past the post.
A few minutes into the second half and Gemma Shepherd played a one-two with Graham before both Schillaci and Alexandra Keown put in vital blocks.
The action switched to the other end midway through the half, with Megen Lynch tipping the ball round the upright after Bianca Baptiste’s corner was met by Schillaci’s header.
Martin headed just over from a Schillaci corner and then Wayne guided Graham’s 25-yard dipping effort past the Spurs post.
Tottenham nearly won in a minute from the end of normal time but Rosie Kmita could not quite find the target from Katie O’Leary’s cross.
Into extra time and Baptiste’s cross hit the frame of the Charlton goal, with Martin later heading an Eartha Pond flag-kick onto the crossbar.
One minute short of a shoot-out, Charlton almost won it but for Keown’s blocks denying both Amy Howlett and Ruby Southgate.
When it came to penalties, Kim Dixson and Shepherd missed Charlton’s first two, while Martin and Sophie McClean netted for Spurs. Graham scored and Schillaci had her shot saved to see the gap narrowed. Charley Clifford and Southgate then both converted for the Addicks but so did Baptiste and O’Leary for Tottenham, the latter being decisive.
