WE KICK – Newmarket Town LFC

Newmarket Town LFC ight have only been in existence for a few months but already have a senior side and four girls’ age-groups.

How did the club and particularly your team get started?

The club was started in July 2014 when current Ladies manager Shane Lebbon set up U-11, U-13 and U-15 teams ready to enter the league in September. This was then followed by an U-9 side and Ladies side who started up in January 2014 ready to enter the 2014/15 season… and here we are now with a successful girls and ladies section and looking to start a new U-9 side.

Tell us your some of the players’ best nicknames and why they have them.

We have Mavis and that’s purely because her name is Marie Avis so the girls combined the two names to create Mavis, that’s probably the most creative nickname we have!

How did the 2013/14 season go for you, what do you expect from 2014/15 and who are your biggest rivals?

The 2013/14 season went well for the U-15 girls who won their league, travelled to Holland and won the VV Maarssen Cup and reached the quarter finals of the Aces National Championships. The Ladies and U-9 teams started in January and the U-11 and U-13s finished mid table.

From 2014/15 I would expect the U-16s to be challenging for a top-two place again and a cup semi-final, although to retain the league would be fantastic but a difficult task. The Ladies are pushing to win their league [Cambridgeshire S-Tech Championship South] in the first season together.

Tell us a top fact about your team:

Of a Ladies squad of 19 players, our average age comes out at just 18.7 years old.

Who is your captain and tell us a bit about her?

Our captain is Lizzie Quigley, her nickname is Quigs and she is a keen darts player in her spare time. She is pretty good when it comes to throw-ins she likes to think she is s bit of a Rory Delap.

What about your coach / manager – Are they serious, funny, good / bad and why?

Shane [Lebbon] our manager and Simon [Tucker] our first team coach are pretty decent, have some good banter but are pretty laid back, while still getting across what needs to be done, and making sure it gets done.

Who is the team’s jock (the fittest) and who is the joker?

Joker of the team has to be Jodie Woodfield – she thinks she has the best banter although we haven’t seen it yet!

Does the team / club have an unsung hero?

Newmarket Ladies are a pretty united team and don’t really have any unsung heroes as everyone does there job well efficiently and plays a vital role in the team.

Who is always first to the bar / on the dancefloor on a night out?

First to the bar is always going to be a race between Quigs, Kirbz (Joeli Kirby) and Calley [Melville-Taylor]. Where ever there is a bar you will find one, if not all three of them.

If you want your team, or one of your players, interviewed here, just email [email protected] for the questions.
