West Ham have signed attacker Martha Thomas from Le Havre in addition to the recent capture of defender Laura Vetterlein from SC Sand.
Thomas, who joined Le Havre last year from the Charlotte 49ers in the US, told whufc.com : “This is a huge club that has done a lot of work on the women’s side, and I was very impressed with what I saw the side achieve in their first season.
Head coach Matt Beard said of Thomas: “She is a very versatile player who can play down the middle, wide, or even in midfield.
“One thing about Martha is that she is a brilliant finisher. We’ve seen that in our research and already on the training fields from her, and that’s something that really excites me about her.
Vetterlein commented on her more to the Hammers: “This is a team with a lot of ambition, which is a big reason why I wanted to join. When you see that a team is playing in finals – like the FA Cup Final – you can’t wait to join up and hopefully we can keep achieving big things.
“I know Julia Simic from Wolfsburg and she spoke really positively about the club and told me that this is a club with a lot of history. That’s also why I wanted to join and be a part of West Ham.”
Beard said of the former UWCL winner: “We needed to bring in a defender who could play on the left side and Laura is capable of playing both left-back and centre-back, which gives us flexibility.
“She’s played for the German national team and has won trophies at one of the biggest clubs in Europe in Wolfsburg.”
