It has truly been a warm welcome to Canada! That’s from the charmingly cheerful Canadians themselves to the glorious weather we enjoyed in Edmonton over the tournament’s opening weekend.
Temperatures in the mid 20s were perfect for the big crowds in the stands, if not necessarily so for the players in the cauldron of the pitch. Considering the pressure, the conditions and the coming together of such diverse footballing nations, the first three days of the tournament have not been short of drama, tension or entertainment.
For the lucky ones who have travelled out here, the first few days have also passed in a confusing time-zone-hopping-induced daze (with games played across five time zones and connecting flights, varying kick off times and the difference between here and the UK becomes bewildering when you haven’t got into a rhythm yet) but the sights, the people, the atmosphere and the action have cut through to make lasting memories already. In the first 24hrs I’d already popped to the massive Edmonton Craft Beer Festival (joined by some pals from the BBC crew) held in the convention centre and stumbled across the colourful, crazy and heart-warming Edmonton Pride march and that was before the main event got underway!
