A golden touch from Bronze sends England through to the last eight I’ve slept on it, like you all have, and I’m still a bit lost for words. It’s a strange one because it shouldn’t be so hard to believe that we beat a solid but far from exceptional Norway
Hands up if you thought it wasn’t going to happen though, even for a minute or two. That once Norway went ahead, England were sunk. Don’t be ashamed to admit it. Let’s be honest, the first half performances – goalkeeper Karen Bardsley aside – had offered little to suggest that there was an almighty turnaround on the cards. Even the slight marginal gains in territory in the opening stages of the second half hadn’t indicated England could seriously threaten Ingrid Hjelmseth’s goal (she hadn’t had a save to make in the opening 45). But as KB herself described, the team didn’t doubt it:
“I think we showed an amazing amount of character today. We had a decision to make in terms of what sort of reaction we would have [to Norway’s goal], I’m very, very, proud that we made a positive one. We weren’t discouraged, we’ve felt like we gained so much momentum in the group stages and I think because of that we had a lot to pull from and we went very, very, deep to make it happen and I’m very proud of the team and the coaching staff.”
