The Lionesses came through a challenging match against a Cameroon side at odds with officials, VAR also playing its part as France eliminated Brazil in extra time.
England were 3-0 winners in a somewhat chaotic last sixteen tie, with Cameroon finding some VAR decisions hard to take.
Steph Houghton did well to net via an indirect free-kick through a crowded goalmouth and Ellen White was eventually deemed to be onside from her clinical finish.
If that did not go down well with Cameroon, worse was to come as Ajana Nchout’s strike into the top corner early in the second half was disallowed for a very tight offside.
The Lionesses survived some other scares and sealed their quarter-final place with Norway when Toni Duggan spotted Alex Greenwood’s run at a corner and the defender hit the back on the net.
Henry hits winner for hosts
Valerie Gauvin had the ball in the net midway through the first half from a Kadidiatou Diani delivery but a VAR review ruled it out for a foul on goalkeeper Barbara.
However, early in the second half, Diani and Gauvin combined again for the latter to register for real.
The lead only lasted 11 minutes as Thaisa’s disallowed drive was checked and deemed a goal.
Tamires got through on the left to fire across Sarah Bouhaddi into the top corner only for offside to be the decision.
Into the second period of extra time and Amandine Henry turned in Amel Majri’s free-kick to set the hosts up for a quarter-final tie against Spain or USA.
