Manchester City surrendered the lead at home to Reading on Friday evening and stay second behind FAWSL leaders Arsenal, albeit by just goal-difference now.

While the hosts were unable to follow up the 6-0 win at Brighton with another victory, for the Royals it was a good recovery from the heavy defeat to the Gunners.

City’s Georgia Stanway had forced a save from Grace Moloney before finding the net on 33 minutes with a 25-yard strike.

The Royals threatened right at the start of the second half and only a Gemma Bonner block prevented Fara Williams from levelling.

The equaliser did come 5 minutes later though, as half-time substitute Jade Moore celebrated her return from a long-term injury by heading home a Williams’ corner.

Maloney denied Nikita Parris a couple of times, Stanway hit the side-netting and City were further frustrated in their attempts at a winner, when Tessa Wullaert struck the crossbar in stoppage time.

The draw sees Reading go level on points with fifth-placed Bristol City.

Attendance: 1,015
