After a draw in their opener, which the team felt they deserved to win, they take on Italy today. Skipper Claire Stancliffe shares the mood from the camp…
I’m feeling good and still positive. We are disappointed with the game on Wednesday and I’m kicking myself over several things, especially my free kick which apparently crossed the line but wasn’t awarded! Of course. our focus is now on Italy later today.
About the Game
We drew 2-2 in our opener with Poland. GB dominated the game and we could have easily been 3-0 up at half time. 5 mins left in the first half, Poland scored to make it 1-1. The second half resulted in a sending off (a second yellow for our forward), while Poland had two players sent off (one for last player + hand ball, the other had two yellows) although the ref allowed the second Polish player to play on for several minutes after her second yellow before showing the red card?
We scored a second after fantastic team play to make it 2-1. Then 25 minutes into the second half, Poland were awarded a penalty for a foul, which they scored to make it 2-2. We felt there were a lot of dubious refereeing decisions and also that diving spoilt the game. But we got a point and we now move on to the Italy game. Everyone is all fit and well up for the game vs Italy.
One Team, One Dream
We cheered on the guys but in turn the men’s team have been fantastic too. They came with us to our game to support. We could visually see them in the stands cheering us on. Obviously we cannot hear it, but to turn round and see it is a massive boost, especially when we score! They provide great critical feedback after the game and pick us up if we are feeling down. We are staying in the same hotel so we see them around in our free time. We are all very close and get on well. Nice to mix with other people from GB but also from other teams as well as some players can communicate in international sign language.
Conditions
The weather here in southern Italy is good. Several thunderstorms and downpours but also hot and humid. The pitches aren’t in the best condition and I’m a bit horrified they have passed inspections for a World Cup!
Send the girls positive vibes!
