Manchester City continued their stutter towards the title with a 1-0 win over Liverpool at the Joie Stadium.
The visitors had much the better start, and continued to create chances throughout – but it was City’s Rebecca Knaak who threw herself headlong at the ball in stoppage time to secure all three points.
City could have sealed the title today in front of their home fans had they not lost to Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend.
Instead, it is still possible for Arsenal to take advantage of their games in hand and leapfrog them – and they made a threatening start with a 7-0 demolition of bottom side Leicester City in midweek. Their next opponents will be Brighton, on Wednesday evening.
And Reds head coach Gareth Taylor was left to rue the missed chance of upsetting the club he managed until last year.
“Unfortunately for us, it’s an error that’s undone us, because we looked really tight and resolute and City ran out of ideas,” Taylor said after the game, according to the club’s official website.
“That’s football sometimes, it can do that to you. The overwhelming feeling for myself is just really proud of the players.”

Taylor – who was returning to the club he managed until last year – added that he was pleased with the way his team had acquitted themselves.
And he highlighted that this was particularly the case bearing in mind their poor start to the season, which left them at the bottom of the table until the turn of the year.
“You saw today there wasn’t a lot between the teams at all. Over the course of the season, that looks slightly different. I’ll admit that. There’s positives from it but we also need to make sure that we’re constantly striving to be better and better.”
