Bethany England praises Tottenham’s ‘never say never’ attitude in comeback win against Aston Villa

Crystal Palace v Tottenham Hotspur FC. Tottenham vs Manchester City prediction

Tottenham captain Bethany England has praised her team’s resilience after coming back to beat Aston Villa to move up the WSL table.

After a disappointing start to the season, Spurs now sit fifth in the WSL – just eight points off Manchester City in first.

Tottenham showing fight yet again

It is safe to say Tottenham have endured a mixed star to this season as we approach the midway point in the campaign.

While their away form has left plenty to be desired, Spurs are on a roll on the road.

Their win against Aston Villa on Sunday was their fourth away win in the last five and the good run has shot them up the table to a top four spot.

Speaking after the 2-1 win, Tottenham captain Bethany England praised her team’s fight back in difficult circumstances.

“It was extremely disappointing to go a player up and then concede. We wanted that clean sheet – we’ve taken a lot of pride in keeping them this season – so that was frustrating.

“But the flip side is the response: we brought it back, got the winner right at the end and everyone was putting their bodies on the line, blocking everything. I couldn’t be prouder of the girls for getting the three points and showing that resilience again.”

Villa were reduced to 10 players just after the hour mark but they still went ahead in the game.

England credited her teammates’ attitude to grind out the three points despite going behind.

“It’s just a never say never attitude. Anything can happen in football – and within a minute, we’d already equalised. It was important to make sure we weren’t sulking or accepting a defeat to a team we know we can beat.”

What next for Tottenham?

Spurs will be hoping to carry their positive league form into the upcoming winter break.

Martin Ho’s team play back to back games against Manchester United before the break. First they face United in the league, before a women’s League Cup quarter final.

It has been reported that Tottenham are looking to bring in some new players in the January transfer window.

The London club has already been linked with a move for former Manchester City defender Julie Blakstad.

Blakstad would be the team’s second signing already, having announced Signe Gaupset as their first arrival for 2026.
