Dominique Janssen returns to one of her former clubs on Wednesday evening as Manchester United take on Wolfsburg in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
The Dutch international spent five years in Germany before she joined United in 2024.
“I’m really excited to be back,” she told a press conference ahead of the game. “It’s a special place. I’ve been here for five years, so returning here gives me a warm feeling.
“So I’m really excited for the game [on Wednesday].”
Wolfsburg are two-time Champions League winners, and Janssen knows that they are an opponent to be wary of – and to learn from.
“Wolfsburg has been in the game for a long time. I think it’s a team you always have to be careful for no matter in the circumstances they are at.
“So it’s very exciting also for us playing [our] first season now in Europe. It’s a big thing. It’s good to get the experience. And I think obviously we can learn a lot from Wolfsburg, but we really want to make their lives difficult…so that’s going to be our aim for [the match].”
Dominique Janssen: We need to be on our toes against Wolfsburg
United head coach Marc Skinner echoed those thoughts, adding: “When I think of Wolfsburg, I always believe that they’re one of the top European teams, so we’re playing against a really good team.”
Gesturing towards Janssen, he said: “We’ve got this lady here because we wanted to grow our experience in the game and especially at this level, so that’s the whole reason we brought Dom to the club.
“We are looking forward to the game…Regardless of the Manchester City [game] on a two-day turnaround [from Paris Saint-Germain last week), we are focused and fresh and ready to go into this huge game.”
And although Janssen said she had not told her team-mates what to expect from the Wolfsburg fans, she knows what to expect on the pitch.
“We know they’re going to be aggressive, they’re going to be pretty direct. They have good quality, so you just need to be on your toes, you need to be ready at all times.
“I’m super excited.”
