Manchester United defender Maya Le Tissier has been backed for England success after scoring the winner in their Champions League victory over Valerenga.

The Red Devils were playing in the main phase of the competition for the first time in their history.

Despite dominating the game against their Norwegian opponents, Le Tissier’s 31st-minute penalty was all that separated the two sides.

Le Tissier has been excellent for United so far this campaign in the Women’s Super League, and recently made history with her 70th consecutive start for the Red Devils.

Marc Skinner backs Maya Le Tissier for England success

Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner believes Maya Le Tissier could become an ‘England stalwart’ after her excellent performances for the Red Devils.

Le Tissier was one of two England players not to play any minutes for the Lionesses at Euro 2025.

Despite playing as a centre-back for her club, England coach Sarina Wiegman still believes her best position is at right-back.

However, Skinner believes that Le Tissier will impress should she get her chance.

He said: “She is [at the top of her game] and has been for a long time. I know the next question is going to be should she start for England.

“I’m not here to answer that question, but I start her for a reason – because she’s an incredible footballer and such a driven personality as well.

“When she gets an opportunity, should Sarina see fit for that, she’ll be an incredible England stalwart and somebody that will give the country pride.”

Skinner also said that it was ‘fitting’ for Le Tissier to score United’s first goal in the Champions League, outside of qualifying games.

The United head coach recently made comparisons with Le Tissier and England star Lucy Bronze.

What’s next for Manchester United and Le Tissier?

Manchester United will look to maintain their unbeaten start to the WSL season when they travel to Everton on Sunday afternoon.

Skinner’s side will then return to Champions League action next Thursday against Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

Atletico will pose a sterner test than Valerenga, and the Spanish side got off to a brilliant start with a 6-0 triumph over St Polten.

Le Tissier is expected to be named in the England squad when the announcement is made on October 14th.

She will hope to get some minutes for the Lionesses, after not featuring at all during their Euro 2025 success. Le Tissier has made just one appearance for England in 2025.
