Champions League format

The Women’s Champions League format has changed for the 2025-26 season.

Instead of the traditional group stage format, it has implemented the league phase system that was introduced in the men’s competition last season.

In total 18 teams will take part in the league phase, including Chelsea, Arsenal and Barcelona.

Manchester United still have some work to do to reach the league phase of the competition.

The second round of the Women’s Champions League consists of mini-tournaments, including semi-finals and finals.

United beat PSV 4-0 on Wednesday, and will play Hammarby in the final, after the Swedish side beat Metalist Kharkiv in a 5-4 thriller.

The winner of the match will move on to the third round of Champions League qualifying, while the loser will drop into the new Women’s Europa Cup competition.

If United reach the third round of qualifying, they will face a two-legged tie, with the winner of that match advancing to the league phase.

Manchester United team news

Elisabeth Terland will lead the Red Devils up front after scoring a hat-trick in their victory against PSV.

The Red Devils will likely keep an unchanged line-up to the one that played against the Dutch side.

Summer signing Fridolina Rolfo is unavailable for United’s Champions League qualifiers as she recovers from a minor injury.

Rachel Williams and Leah Galton are also out of action. Grace Clinton, who has been linked with a move away from the club, is also unlikely to feature as she recovers from a minor injury.

Predicted lineups

Manchester United: Tullis-Joyce; Riviere, Le Tissier, Janssen, Sandberg; Zigiotti, Miyazawa; Toone, Naalsund, Bizet; Terland

Hammarby: Loeck; Holmberg, Carlsson, Bragstad, Blakstad; Joramo, Vilma Koivisto, Hasund; Lennartsson, Wangerheim, Josendal

Manchester United vs Hammarby prediction

Manchester United were in electric form against PSV, with Elisabeth Terland scoring a hat-trick and Celin Bizet also on the scoresheet.

Hammarby had to score in the third minute of stoppage time to secure a 5-4 victory over Metalist Kharkiv on Wednesday night.

The Swedish side were ruthless in front of goal but will have some defensive concerns going into a match against a United side who are much superior to Metalist Kharkiv in terms of quality.

Although Hammarby should have the home support, we predict that United will walk away with a 4-1 victory and book their place in the third round of Champions League qualifying.

Prediction: Manchester United 4-1  Hammarby
