Manchester United v PSV preview

Marc Skinner’s Manchester United side kick off their Women’s Champions League campaign with a second-round qualifying clash against PSV on Wednesday.

The Red Devils return to Europe’s most prestigious competition after a season away. Their participation in the 2023-24 tournament was the only season they have previously played Champions League football.

It has been a mixed pre-season for the Red Devils, who have drawn matches against Women’s Super League rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

However, they showed their attacking prowess in an 8-0 thrashing of Real Betis.

Manchester United have signed two high-profile players during the summer transfer window.

Midfielder Julia Zigiotti Olme joined from Bayern Munich for an undisclosed fee, before Fridolina Rolfo arrived as a free agent after she mutually agreed to terminate her contract with Barcelona.

Qualifying for the Women’s Champions League is complicated, with United taking part in a mini-tournament to make the third round of qualifying.

If United lose once, they will drop to the new Women’s Europa Cup. However, if they lose twice, they will crash out of Europe altogether.

Champions League format

The qualification stage is split into two mini-tournaments – a ‘champions path’ and a ‘league path’

United are in the league path, and their second-round of qualifying comprises of a mini-tournament featuring four sides.

Should United beat PSV, they will face the winner of Hammarby vs Metalist Kharkiv on Saturday. Should they lose to PSV, they will face a third-place play-off against the loser of the meeting the Swedish and Ukrainian sides.

If they finish runner-up or third in their mini-tournament, they will drop to the Women’s Europa Cup.

Should United win both games, they will advance to the third round of qualifying, where if they win they make the league phase of the competition, or drop to the Europa Cup if they lose.

The league phase will comprise of 18 teams, with the top four teams advancing to the quarter-finals, while the teams placed between 5th and 12th, face a play-off clash to make the last-eight.

PSV are coming off the disappointment of losing their Dutch Super Cup clash with FC Twente. Despite taking a 2-0 lead, they eventually fell to a 3-2 defeat.

The Dutch side were last in the Champions League in 2020-21, when they were knocked out by Arsenal in the qualifying rounds.

Manchester United team news

The big news for Manchester United is that new signing Fridolina Rolfo will miss their Champions League qualifying clash with PSV.

During his pre-match press conference, head coach Marc Skinner said that Rolfo, Rachel Williams and Leah Galton will all be out for “two or three weeks”.

Grace Clinton is also carrying a minor knock and will miss the PSV clash. Her absence comes at a time when she is the subject of interest from Women’s Super League rivals Manchester City and Arsenal.

Melvine Malard missed the game against Liverpool but will be ready to feature against PSV, though that could be off the bench.
