Former Spain manager Montse Tome has hit out at the president of the Spanish football federation and insisted that no one told her that she had been sacked, before the news broke.

Tome led Spain to the Euro 2025 final where they ultimately fell short on penalties to England.

There had been doubts over her future, as her contract was set to expire on August 31st.

However, Spain took the decision to make a change, sacking Tome and replacing her with Sonia Bermudez.

Reports in Spain have suggested that Tome is not happy with the decision, and feels that federation president Rafael Louzan “didn’t keep his word”.

In an interview with El Larguero, Montse Tome said that she discovered she had been sacked by Spain through her representative.

She said: “No one told me I was fired. I found out I wouldn’t be leading the national team anymore through a message from my representative.

“Rafael Louzan told me that if we had a good Euro Cup, I would stay on. I’m disappointed because I think he went back on his promise to me.”

In a separate interview with Radio Car, she added: “He (Louzan) has always shown a lot of confidence in me, but I’m a little disappointed about how everything was handled. He didn’t keep his word about the continuity. I felt that he was happy with my work.

“It was hard to understand everything that happened since the final. It’s understandable that the federation wants to go into a new direction, but that message wasn’t really clear for me. They had given me a different impression.”

Tome added that she is “not concerned” that some of her Spain squad didn’t leave messages about her on social media. The 43-year-old added that many of the players had privately message her.

Why was Tome sacked by Spain?

Reports have suggested that the decision to sack Montse Tome came before Women’s Euro 2025.

They added that the sacking would have been made regardless of whether Spain beat England or not.

Her replacement, Sonia Bermudez, has been promoted to the role after working with Spain’s youth squads in recent years.

During her playing career, she featured for the likes of Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Rayo Vallecano and Levante.

She won a total of nine league titles and three other trophies, and also played at the European Championship and World Cup for Spain.

Bermudez joins a Spain squad who are the early favourites to win Euro 2029 ahead of England.
