Dagný Brynjarsdóttir departs West Ham after four and a half years at the club

Iceland international Dagný Brynjarsdóttir has departed West Ham after four and a half years with the club.

Brynjarsdóttir’s contract expired this summer and at 33-years-old she decided it was time to leave the club that she has supported her whole life.

The midfielder has become one of West Ham’s longest active serving players over the last few years.

Brynjarsdóttir will be missed dearly by all in London but fans will be grateful that their superstar captain was able to return to the club for one last hurrah.

After announcing her pregnancy in 2023, Brynjarsdóttir confirmed that she would miss the entirety of the 2023/24 season.

Many believed that could be the end of the 33-year-old’s career but after giving birth to her second son in 2024 the West Ham captain returned to action.

After returning to the pitch Brynjarsdóttir agreed to a one-year contract extension.

Brynjarsdóttir made 87 appearances for the Hammers throughout her career. Her appearances across five seasons makes her thee fourth-most capped player for West Ham.

“Wearing the famous Claret and Blue has been the greatest honour of my life and something, as a little girl growing up in Iceland supporting West Ham, is something I could only dream about doing.” Brynjarsdóttir said after announcing she was leaving.

“Now that this chapter has now come to a close, I can look back on the last four-and-a-half years with real pride. I think that the Club is in a better place now and I’m proud of the role that I’ve played in creating that environment.

“The memories that I have created both on and off the pitch will stay with me forever. This definitely isn’t a goodbye, it’s a see you soon.”

While West Ham never won the league during Brynjarsdóttir’s time at the club, the team was able to survive relegation despite some tricky campaigns.

What next for Brynjarsdóttir?

On the international stage Brynjarsdóttir has represented her country at four European Championships – including this summer in Switzerland which was her first call-up since having her second child.

What comes next for West Ham’s beloved star is unknown but with just under a month before domestic football returns an announcement can be expected soon.
