Substitute Lucie Voňková wracked up the tension when bringing the overall scores level with 7 minutes left, again with a flag kick not dealt with.

But Emma Hayes’ side held on to reach the last sixteen and she later tweeted: ‘That was the longest 20 minutes of my life but this team, what character and heart.’

Gintra and Zürich were heading for extra-time until Zenatha Coleman’s second goal of the game 4 minutes from time sent the Lithuanian side through.

Montpellier bounced back from losing at home to Zvezda by winning 2-0 away with both goals by Sofia Jakobsson.

Brescia also overturned a deficit to defeat Ajax 2-1 over 180 minutes, Monica Mendes with the decider with 7 minutes remaining.

There was no addition to the score in Denmark, as debutants Fiorentina put out Fortuna Hjørring 2-1.

Stjarnan scored four times in 22 minutes to go through 5-1 against Rossiyanka, who later had Darya Yakovleva sent off.
