Ireland Into UEFA U-17 Elite Stage

Republic of Ireland are through to the UEFA U-19 Championship Elite Round after a 2-0 win over Romania this afternoon, while Wales are out after suffering a second defeat.

Colin Bell’s Irish side followed up their opening day win over the host country Bosnia & Herzegovina thanks to penalties converted in either half.

Tyler Toland scored from the spot in first half injury-time after Emily Whelan was fouled in the area by Krisztina Beno.

Four minutes from time Isibeal Atkinson converted after Cristina Tudorache fouled Megan Mackey.

“It was a well deserved victory. The score-line really could have been much higher,” said Colin Bell, whose side will seek to finish Group 4 with a 100% winning record when they meet Greece in Kakanj on Saturday.

Wales had a tougher time of it against France, managing just a couple of shots that failed to trouble the keeper, while the French had 20 efforts at the Welsh goal.

Margaux Le Mouël opened the scoring on 15 minutes, Madeline Roth added a brace before the break and Malaury Craff rounded off the scoring at 4-0 in the second half.

Any slim hopes of Wales still being able to progress from Group 5 were ended as Denmark hit Kazakhstan for six in the day’s other game, including four goals from Kirstine Roland Lykke.

Wales finish their fixtures against hosts Kazakhstan on Saturday.
